The Tillandsia collection at Selby Gardens is slowly being relocated into a new 1,350 square foot pipe and poly greenhouse made possible by generous support by the Founders Circle Garden Club of Sarasota, Florida.
Before each plant is placed into it's new home, it is checked for proper identification, cleaned and, if necessary, remounted and dipped in an insecticide-fertilizer mixture.
Considering that this collection consists of nearly 1,500 individual plants in 1,274 accessions, the process is taking some time.
Tillandsia, the largest genus in the Bromeliaceae family, consists of many colorful, small to medium size species. These are often called air plants, as many are strictly epiphytic.
