This Month’s Meeting – Field Trip to Plants and Things in Ocala

I just love field trips – I have since elementary school and this one should be great fun – a day at Plants and Things, the Aldrich’s nursery in Ocala. Many of us have had the pleasure of visiting there before and I can tell you – you are in for a treat! Bring your purses and wallets with you. This is a working plant nursery and there will be some terrific bromeliads and other plants available for purchase. The address is 746 N.E. 35th Street in Ocala. There is a map on the last page of this newsletter that should get you there. The Aldrichs will be looking for us around 10:30 am on our usual meeting date, October 14th. The following is from their business card:

Ocala, Fl. 34479-2712

For most of us, the best route to Ocala will be SR 40, west. Continue on 40 to Silver Springs and turn right onto NE 53rd St. at the intersection where this road splits with 35 to the south and NE 53rd St. to the north. Turn left onto NE 35th St. and then proceed west on NE 35th St. to the Aldrichs. Their place will be on the left and it looks like it’s a little under 5 miles from where you first turned onto NE 35th St. to this point. Slow down and look sharp, because it’s easy to drive past their place without realizing it. If you are coming from a different direction, head toward Ocala, orient yourself on the map on the last page and you should be able to find your way there.

Last Month’s Meeting

Last month’s meeting was a lot of fun. Bradley demonstrated a number of different ways to mount bromeliads on varying materials. I think everyone was very interested in the topic and left the meeting anxious to try out what they had just learned using plant from their collections. Let’s revisit this topic in 6 months or so and see how successful everyone has been! Attendance at this year’s meetings has really been outstanding – and I’ve got to attribute that to the great programs that our Vice President has lined up. Thanks Nina, for a job well done! Any more members for our monthly meetings and we may have to move to a larger meeting location.

…and did I say that attendance at our meetings has been good? We were extremely well represented at this year’s Extravaganza. I counted 16 members of our group at the hotel in Ft. Lauderdale last weekend – that is probably a higher proportion of club members than from any other club in the state! That’s something to be proud of! If you missed it, by the way, the only way to describe this year’s Extravaganza is with one word: "Wow!" Attendance set a new record, the rare plant auction set a new record for total donations to the Florida Council, the seminars were excellent (or so I heard, I was tied up most of the time and unable to go to the seminars), the tours were excellent, even the banquet food was…good! The Broward County Society did an excellent job in planning and execution of this event and they deserve a solid round of applause!

Next year’s event will be hosted by the Bromeliad Guild of Tampa Bay and I know that they have a few tricks up their sleeves that will make Extravaganza ’08 just as memorable – so plan on attending now!

Frost Cloth

Our friends in Boggy Creek Bromeliads will be ordering frost cloth soon and have kindly offered to take orders from club members. This material is 15’ wide and orders will only be taken for 25’ and 50’ lengths. The price is $1/ft. (even I can do the math on this one – 25ft comes to $25.). Contact me ASAP if you wish to order some of this material. Winter is coming – now is the time to begin preparing!
