Plan Ahead!

Every year around the second week of February we experience the phenomenon known as "Speedweeks" in which the normal population of 65,000 residents suddenly swells with the influx of well over 150,000 race fans coming to town to enjoy the activities leading up to and including the Daytona 500. Traffic suddenly triples and a 15 minute drive becomes 45 minutes of bumper to bumper traffic. At this time of year the most commonly heard excuse in the Daytona Beach area is "I was late because of race-fan traffic around the speedway." Local residents are used to this and they make their plans accordingly, but for out-of-towners this can be a bit of a surprise.

I’m bringing this to your attention because this month’s meeting takes place during the 15 day period of Speedweeks and traffic is likely to be quite heavy. Don’t let this discourage you from attending the meeting!!! Just keep an eye on the traffic and plan on it taking a little extra time to get to the meeting.

Speaking of the meeting…you won’t want to miss this one! Michael Andreas is the Webmaster for the Florida Council of Bromeliad Societies and is the man responsible for having those thousands of beautiful pictures of bromeliads posted at FCBS.org and available at your fingertips. Michael is also a BSI Director representing Florida. His wife Karen is the president of the Bromeliad Society of Central Florida. Michael has agreed to be our guest speaker this month and will talk to us about photographing plants. He suggests that you bring a favorite bromeliad with you that you would like to have photographed and he will demonstrate the best way to get a high quality photograph…and no, that doesn’t mean that the best way to get a good photo is to let someone else take the picture for you. There’s no reason why any one of us can’t take a professional quality photo of our plants. You’ll see how easy this truly is.

Looking ahead:

This is always a hectic time of the year and this year is no exception. It seems like there is some plant show-related activity going on nearly every weekend. I would like to get to all of these, but unfortunately there are always some scheduling conflicts. At least pick one of these and let us know what you thought of the event at the following meeting!
