Neoregelia melanodonta not 'Deep Purple'

In August 1985 Neoregelia melanodonta 'Deep Purple' was on offer. Keith Bradtberg grew on some of this seed but was disappointed when most of the batch turned out like this. Not a Neoregelia melanodonta and not deep purple! Most of the batch was destroyed but one showed great promise with a bright red centre and large flowers. This was named 'Samantha' after one of his daughters.
