"What do Phylidonyris novaehollandiae and Tillandsia usneoides have in common? What makes a New Holland honeyeater decide to make a hanging nest? You don't know! Well, it has got you thinking as it did me.
The Honeyeater has never experienced Tillandsia usneoides in its past but
it has seen the odd Tillandsia, Aechmea and Billbergia in flower in the
Butcher's garden. It did not take long to decide that food was available in
these flowers and they do no damage while pinching the nectar. What did
surprise us was to find a clump of Tillandsia usneoides with a tail or was
it a tale to tell. I have never known Honeyeaters to make a suspended nest
but here it is. I am also used to taking photos of static plants and not
things that flit about so you will have to make do with a static shot of
our bird!" |
