New Tillandsia Handbook
by Hideo Shimizu and Hiroyuki Takisawa

Derek Butcher New Tillandsia Handbook by Hideo Shimizu, Hiroyuki Takizawa "The best book on the market for identifying Tillandsias at the moment is the New Tillandsia Handbook by Hideo Shimizu and Hiroyuki Takisawa. What is amazing is that out of nearly 450 photographs only 4, in my mind, could be in dispute regarding identification. The correct photos are shown on this Web site under the Menu item "Pictures" if you want to compare. Some others make interesting discussion.

Page 43 T. cochabambae is incorrect. This is probably T. toropiensis.

Page 69 T. leonamiana. This is the closest yet to the plant described by Pereira in 1974. Other plants being sold under this name should be called T. recurvifolia (see page 81). T. leonamiana is very rare indeed in collections.

Page 70 T. lorentziana v. argentea is an invalid variety an is probably T. boliviensis.

Page 74 T. montana is probably T. pseudomontana. Regrettably we don't have a photo of T. pseudomontana to show you yet.

Page 84 T. rothii. This photo is more representative of this possible natural hybrid than that shown in Charlie's Web page

Page 91 T. tenuifolia v. vaginata. I believe should have white petals even though not mentioned in the description. Two considered synonyms are Leme's 'candida' and Morren's 'amoena' which both have white petals.

Tillandsia 'Nezley' Page 112 T. usneoides x mallemontii. This hybrid has not been reported in the wild and in all probability is an Australian hybrid made in the 1960's by Nezley Misso in Queensland . In the late 1980's this was named 'Nezley'

Page 113 T. xerographica x capitata. This plant has an interesting history because I have a plant by this name AND I have a plant called "Guatemalan sphaerocephala". (We all know that that the true T. sphaerocephala is only found in Bolivia!) Anyway, I can find no difference between these plants having taken the flower to pieces. Renate Ehlers was also intrigued about this T. sphaerocephala from Guatemala and set out to find it in the wild. She found it near the Rio Hondo AND I have a piece which has flowered in my collection. She did not find any T. xerographica in the vicinity. I now have 3 plants looking identical! My plant has T. capitata Rio Hondo on the label because I can link it to a collection number whereas I acquired the other two by untraceable circuitous routes! "
